Making the Change from Dorm Room to Home

January 9th, 2012

When we are in college it’s a lot of fun to have the party room. Cool junk all over the place, posters on the walls and three different beer pong tables ready to go at a moment’s notice. Eventually you get your own place and you are no longer the college kid. It’s time to upgrade the domicile.
The first thing you need to do is take down the posters and pennants. It’s great to love your favorite band, sports team or fitness model but keep them in your personal space and out of the living room. If you want to display such things you can incorporate it into your den or living room but it’s time to actually frame those posters and ditch the push pins. You don’t need to get super fancy with the frame either. A simple black frame with a sheet of plexi is classy all alone.
Sell your portable beer pong tables. They had their time in the spot light but if you aren’t planning on doing weekend keggers then it’s just a bunch of clutter you don’t need. There is no classy and adult way to have beer pong tables as a part of your home. While you’re at it, switch out the bad beer for something worth drinking. There’s a thriving craft brew scene. Take advantage of it.
Speaking of beer, ditch the bottle collection. Unless you are collecting antique bottles from the late 1800s, your home being lines with empty bottles is really tacky and can even be pretty gross. When highly intoxicated, cleaning out the bottle for later display is not your first priority. It’s not a trophy rack. It’s a recycling bin. Nobody is impressed by your 40oz bottles from your 21st birthday 7 years ago.
These are just a few suggestions that will help you stay classy and not seem like you are hanging onto your fading college glory. Get rid of it… or set up a man-cave in the basement and invite over your old frat brothers once a week. Just don’t do it one wine night.
